We’re looking for a new Trustee to join us with financial insight and a heart for impact. What difference will you make? The impact you’ll have As a Trustee with financial insight, you’ll play a key role in helping Ups and Downs Southwest maintain sound financial oversight at a time of growth and change. You won’t be expected to take on full Treasurer responsibilities unless you want to — instead, you’ll be part of a collaborative and supportive Board that works together to ensure financial matters are well understood and appropriately managed. Your input will help ensure We have clear, accessible financial reports that guide decision-making We understand and manage financial risk We are compliant with charity finance regulations Our funding is well-planned and sustainable Your contribution will also support the CEO and wider Board in developing a strong financial narrative for funders and stakeholders — helping us continue our vital work with families and young people with Down Syndrome across the Southwest. This is a real opportunity to shape the future of a small but impactful charity and make a difference to the lives of those we support. You’ll bring a fresh perspective, help us ask the right questions, and ensure that financial integrity is embedded in everything we do. Skills, qualities and experience We’re looking for someone who has a good understanding of finances and a desire to make a difference. You don’t need to be a qualified accountant or have prior board experience — we’re more interested in your ability to support financial decision-making and be part of a collaborative team. You might be Working in a finance-related role and looking to gain board-level experience Experienced in business, charity, or public sector finance Retired or semi-retired and keen to give back to a cause you care about Someone with strong financial awareness and an interest in supporting a small charity We’re particularly interested in candidates who can Understand and interpret financial reports, budgets and forecasts Identify financial risks and opportunities Ask thoughtful, constructive questions about our financial performance Help ensure financial information is presented clearly and accessibly Contribute to discussions about sustainability and funding You’ll need to be A team player – we take a collective approach to governance and decision-making Willing to learn – we’ll support you to understand our work and the role of Trustees Committed – we hold 6–8 board meetings per year (some online, some in-person in the Southwest) Supportive – of our mission, our families, and inclusive practices Desirable (but not essential) Experience of charity finance or SORP Knowledge of small charities or not-for-profits Lived experience of Down Syndrome or caring responsibilities We value diversity in all its forms and welcome applicants who may not have previously considered a Trustee role. We take a joint approach to oversight and are committed to supporting new Trustees in their role. We particularly welcome applicants who may be new to governance or who bring lived experience of Down Syndrome or caring responsibilities.
