As a Distinguished Detection Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing and improving our risk detection capabilities, working closely with our cybersecurity teams to protect our organization from emerging threats. About the Role We're seeking a highly skilled and motivated Distinguished Detection Engineer to join our team. As a Detection Engineer, you will be responsible for creating and refining detection rules, signatures, and signals to identify potential threats. You will work closely with our cybersecurity teams to analyze threats and vulnerabilities, develop risk indicators, and implement advanced detection mechanisms. Key Responsibilities: Develop and refine detection rules, signatures, and signals tailored to our organization's risk landscape using industry-specific intelligence and advanced use cases. Conduct comprehensive threat analysis and vulnerability assessments to identify potential risks and develop risk indicators. Design and execute simulated attack scenarios to evaluate the resilience and detection capabilities of our internal systems and networks. Collaborate with other cybersecurity teams to bridge the gap between offense and defense. Develop and implement novel threat-hunting and detection engineering techniques and methodologies. Deliver comprehensive and accurate reports and presentations to both technical and executive audiences. Provide insights and recommendations to enhance security controls and mitigation strategies. Stay up-to-date with the latest cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), and communicate this information to relevant teams within Verizon. Requirements and Qualifications Essential Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field. 3+ years of relevant work experience in risk studies, detection engineering, threat hunting, or red teaming. 2+ years of experience in risk studies, turning procedural cyber risk intelligence into adversary emulation plans while building related detections. Strong understanding of adversary behaviors, detection engineering, endpoint protection solutions, networking and protocols, firewalls, databases, and middleware applications. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex security concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching or training others about adversary behaviors, detection engineering, or red teaming. Knowledge of the SIGMA project, LOLBAS project, or MITRE ATT&CK Framework. Industry certifications, such as GCED, GCFA, GCTI, or GDAT. Experience with Purple Team exercises. Solid knowledge of blue team methods and technologies (EDR, NDR, SIEM, data sources, threat hunting, etc.). Ability to perform Shell scripting or automation of simple tasks using Bash, Python, or Go.
