The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker ( ) to join our team in Bellingham, WA to support the vast transportation infrastructure of Northwest Washington. This night shift journey-level position operates a wide variety of heavy highway equipment in maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Working in the maintenance area will require responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish skilled tasks that require operating trucks and various other highway and heavy equipment. This is perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands and working outdoors. What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will: • Operate class A, B or C equipment and power tools. • Perform manual labor on projects such as asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair. • Perform drainage maintenance and maintenance for catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches. • Repair erosion and slide damage. • Maintain and repair signage, guardrail, fence, and impact attenuators. • Remove danger trees; manage vegetation and maintain rights-of-ways, including applying pesticides and responding to work requests from internal and external customers. • Routinely operate vactor, sweeper, hydraulic excavator, backhoe, booms and cranes, asphalt box, bulldozers, and road graders. • Design and set up traffic control for all operations, as well as full road or bridge closures. • Respond to accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations. • Plan work activities and run crews and work operations in the absence of the HMW3. Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required: • High school diploma or GED. • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A driver's license with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months. • Ability to lift 50 pounds in a safe manner. It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: • Washington State Flagging Card • Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License Important Notes • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. • This position is not eligible for remote work. • The assigned work schedule for these positions is Night Shift: Sunday - Wednesday night. • This position requires working long hours outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather. Hazardous conditions may include negotiating steep, rough, and uneven terrain; working at heights above 25 feet over land or water; conducting maintenance operations in high traffic urban/suburban traffic corridors, including confined spaces; and exposure to sharps, bloodborne pathogens, and other hazardous materials. • Local travel is required to perform daily work assignments. Some regional and statewide travel may be required to attend meetings and conferences or to participate in training. • The salary for this position will include an additional $2.00 per hour for Night Shift. • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
