Job Summary The Associate Counsel will be responsible for researching laws, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department. Key Responsibilities Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support the defense of lawsuits filed in California courts Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department to ensure informed decision-making Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath Defending cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable, to achieve the best possible outcomes for GEICO Collaborating with the Claims Department and other stakeholders to ensure effective communication and coordination Traveling as required to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences to represent GEICO's interests Documenting files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner to ensure transparency and accountability Essential Qualifications 2-6+ years of experience in litigation, preferably in insurance defense or personal injury law Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school Admission to the California Bar and licensure in good standing to practice law in California Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex legal concepts and apply them to real-world scenarios Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders Strong organization, priority-setting, and multi-tasking skills, with the ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously Preferred Qualifications Civil litigation experience, preferably in insurance defense or personal injury law Insurance defense-related litigation experience, with a strong understanding of the insurance industry and its regulatory framework Ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner, both in person and in writing, with strong presentation and negotiation skills Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At GEICO, we are committed to the growth and development of our employees.
