About the Role As an Institutional Pharmacy Technician at WI-St. Agnes Hospital, you'll play a vital role in supporting our pharmacists and ensuring the seamless operation of our drug distribution system. Your expertise will be crucial in preparing, counting, labeling, and delivering medications to our patients, as well as maintaining the integrity of our automated dispensing systems. Key Responsibilities Medication Preparation and Distribution: Prepare medications for pharmacist verification prior to refill in automated dispensing machines. Pack and label medication orders requested from units, including unit dose packaging products as indicated. Deliver medications to automated dispensing machines and utilize expiration tracking features. Delivery and Retrieval: Deliver patient medication doses to the proper unit areas and return unused or discontinued doses to the pharmacy. Retrieve discharged patient medications from storage areas on nursing units to minimize wrong-patient related safety concerns. Inventory Management: Conduct monthly inspections of all areas where drugs are stored, replacing outdated or unusable medications. Assist in inventory control, including ordering, checking in orders, stocking shelves, updating the computerized inventory system, rotating stock, processing recalls, and conducting quarterly inspections. Controlled Substances Handling: Follow all procedures for documenting and dispensing controlled substances, ensuring accountability and security. Operational Efficiency: Work in a constant state of alertness and safety, performing other duties as assigned. Essential Qualifications To excel in this role, you'll need: A High School diploma or equivalent. No prior experience is required; we'll provide comprehensive training. The ability to lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs., with frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling of objects weighing 0-25 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements. Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near and far, as well as the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Frequent keyboard use/data entry and oral communication. Preferred Qualifications and Certifications While not mandatory, having the following certifications or being willing to obtain them within the specified timeframe is highly advantageous: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) within 24 months through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the relevant state board (e.g., Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Missouri Division of Professional Registration, Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy) within the specified timeframe. Skills and Competencies To succeed as an Institutional Pharmacy Technician, you'll need: Attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintaining a high level of accuracy and efficiency. Basic computer skills and familiarity with pharmacy software systems.
