How we’ll deliver success:We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a backend team working on and important and business critical domains at Shippo. This team plays a foundational role in enabling scalable, reliable, and efficient shipping solutions for our customers worldwideResponsibilitiesLead, mentor, and grow a team of backend engineersFoster an inclusive, high-performance cultureDefine and execute the technical roadmap for the Rating API domainEnsure scalability, low latency, and high availability of high-volume APIsDeliver new rating features, including carrier integrations and advanced pricing modelsPartner with Product, Infrastructure, and Carrier teams to align on priorities and improve performanceDrive best practices in API design, monitoring, and system resilienceOwn SLAs/SLOs for Rating APIs and ensure operational excellenceManage incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvementChampion automation, testing, and CI/CD for faster, safer deliveryStreamline processes for managing rate cards and adjacent data to ensure accurate customer rates and correct Shippo chargesRequirementsMust have at least 3+ years of hands-on engineering management experience including managing deliverables, participating with product and design to define MVP, managing performance and growth of reporters and managing stakeholdersHas managed teams of 8+ people for many of those years9+ years of experience in software developmentCoding experience in backend programming languages (e.g. Python, Go, Java, Ruby)Experience working with Backend frameworks (e.g. Django, FastAPI)Solid understanding of object-oriented programming and familiarity with various design and architectural patternsExperience integrating with APIs that use REST, gRPC, SOAP and other technologiesExperience managing external vendors and integrations with 3rd party APIsExceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skillsDeep understanding of customer needs and passion for customer successBS or MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experienceBonusCoding experience in database languages (SQL)Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g. DynamoDB)Experience with queue technologies (e.g. Redis, Kafka, NSQ)What's in the Shippo package? The standard base pay range for this role is min is $175k to a max $238k annual salary. Since we are focused on hiring Shippos Everywhere, we have 2 US pay ranges, a standard compensation range for the majority of the US and a standard +1 compensation range for those who live in areas where the cost of labor is higher, such as NYC and California. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: financial budgets, work experience, training, transferable skills, business needs, and market value. The base pay salary ranges are subject to change and may be modified in the future. Total compensation for this role will include, equity, medical, dental, vision and other benefits noted in our Shippos “package” section.
