About the Role: Leading Explanatory Journalism and International Coverage The International desk is seeking a versatile and accomplished Deputy Editor to play a pivotal role in shaping our global coverage and explanatory journalism. As a key member of our team, you'll be responsible for building and leading our approach to explanatory journalism, breaking down complex stories, and making our content more accessible to a broader audience. You'll work closely with our correspondents, editors, and reporters to drive daily news coverage, enterprise stories, and innovative storytelling techniques. Key Responsibilities: Lead the desk's coverage for our international report and communicate with our Seoul and London hubs to ensure seamless global coverage. Define and lead our approach to explanatory journalism across the desk, working with editors and correspondents to develop engaging and informative content. Generate story ideas, drive daily news coverage, and oversee enterprise stories that demonstrate solid news judgment and creativity. Ensure that security guidance is sought and followed in assignments, prioritizing the safety and well-being of our journalists. Edit and elevate stories across various formats, from live briefings and spot news to longer-term features and ambitious enterprise projects. Juggle multiple coverage priorities across numerous regions, supervising and working with editors and reporters to shape stories and bring them to life. Collaborate across newsroom desks, including Business, Visuals, Culture, and more, to develop major coverage lines and maintain high-quality journalism. Communicate with the masthead and desk leadership about editorial priorities, providing feedback on stories and coverage lines. Lead and inspire a team of talented editors and reporters, coaching, developing, and recruiting talent across the desk. Work with reporters and editors to conceptualize stories, guide revisions, and ensure content reaches the widest possible audience. Maintain the ethical standards of The Times in all published material, serving as a point of contact for questions about sourcing and independence. Essential Qualifications: At least 10 years of experience writing and editing news, enterprise, and other story forms, demonstrating a strong background in journalism. At least 10 years of experience assigning stories or directing coverage, showcasing your ability to lead and manage a team. Experience dealing with management, staff, and sources in a highly professional manner, with the capacity to collaborate and influence across desks. Impeccable news judgment and the confidence to carry it out, driving high-quality journalism and innovative storytelling. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated leadership capability, whether in management or team-leading, with a strong track record of success. An appreciation of The Times' culture, writing style, and commitment to journalistic standards and ethics, aligning with our values and behaviors. A curiosity about the world and how we cover it, with a passion for staying ahead of the curve in global journalism. A good digital sense, with a knack for different types of storytelling and a willingness to adapt to new formats and technologies. Diplomacy and the ability to roll with change, as well as to give and receive constructive feedback, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment. The ability to work effectively across desks and at the necessary pace to meet deadlines for multiple platforms, prioritizing accuracy and quality. Meticulous organizational and communication skills, with a deft touch with copy, including display type, and a knowledge of Times style.
