Job Description of Transport Apprentice: Improve your driving aptitude and obtain substantial knowledge to effortlessly operate a tractor-trailer combination. In addition to driving, you'll also be liable for non-driving functions such as working on the dock and utilizing a forklift. Responsibilities of Transport Apprentice: • Apply sufficient motorized and manual machines, such as a forklift, handcart, and pallet lifter, to handle the shipment. • One of the most important practices to abide by when working with heavy machinery is performing safety checks regularly • The process of attaching and detaching trailers and converter dollies from a tractor requires precision and expertise • Ensure that the freight description, weight, and hazardous materials information on the documentation aligns with the electronic or manual system used to track and monitor freight shipments • The use of the correct tools and materials such as straps, ropes, and pallets is crucial when securing freight inside trailers for transportation • Salvaging and mending freight that has been damaged • Accurate and complete documentation is essential for businesses to operate smoothly, as it helps to prevent errors and avoid costly mistakes • Assist individuals in managing their shipments and completing the related paperwork • The proper functioning of our organization requires us to adhere to our policies/procedures and all relevant legal and regulatory requirements • Complete further duties as necessary Qualification of Transport Apprentice: • must meet employment requirements with an appropriate Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). • Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations • Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator Basic written and verbal communication skills • Ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights several times a week, to lift dock plates weighing approximately 100 pounds, and to open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force, up to several times per day or more • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member • Before beginning work classification, one must have a class A commercial driver's license (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP). Work Condition of Transport Apprentice: The preparation and supply of such goods must be in compliance to ensure safety precautions are being taken.
